Sound-Proofing Your Backyard Retreat

The backyard deck. For many this is intended to be a relaxing retreat from the demands of everyday life. Someplace where you can sit back, sip on a cold one and enjoy life. Sounds great, doesn’t it, except for the constant hum of cars from the busy nearby freeway. Or how about barking Fido next door, or the children playing in the neighborhood park — so much for your relaxing retreat.
While you can’t totally sound proof your yard, there are some things you can do to help reduce the level of noise and make your space more private.
Add a fountain or other moving water source to your yard. While the sound of trickling water won’t block out the sound of screaming children, it does provide a soothing distraction. In addition, a small pond with a few goldfish or a decorative fountain can add a lot of character to a deck or backyard.
Plant a green fence. Nothing fills in an area quicker than a cedar hedge or a natural divider of spruce or pine trees. You can keep them low and dense or let them grow tall, providing on the area you want to cover. Other good choices are tropical plants such as palms or bamboo plants which can be left out year round.
Adding an awning or a roof to your deck creates a more private atmosphere, almost giving the impression of a separate room. Hang a birdfeeder, a couple plants or colorful containers for accents.
For instant privacy, a fence or slotted privacy screen is a little more drastic, but it can be an effective sound barrier.
Plant a tree. A few small trees around the outside of your deck or yard can act as nature’s privacy walls and help to muffle the sound. Choose from smaller species such as Amur Maple, Sourwood, or the Pagoda Dogwood. If you have existing trees, instead of cutting down that apple tree, build your deck around it. It creates natural shade, adds character and the feeling of being out in nature.
Fill in the empty spaces with flowering vines. Climbers are great for filling in a trellis, or covering an area from post to post. Some of the more hardy varieties include Clematis, Hops, Cardinal Vine, Spanish Flag, or Hyacinth Bean.
Hang outdoor wall coverings. Add fabric or woven bamboo shades to block out any unwanted views or create privacy. Decks after all, are an extension of your inside living space, and blinds help to reinforce this concept.
