Drugs and alcohol are substances that are addictive. When a person is addicted to these substances, the body craves for them. The period when a person tries to overcome his addiction and finally have a successful withdrawal is called detoxification.

When a person starts using drugs and alcohol, his body becomes dependent on the substances. During the withdrawal process, the person’s body even craves more for the substances but the person should be able to resist. This process of trying to overcome drugs and alcohol addiction is called detoxification.

Detoxification is always part of any rehabilitation program. A person can only be successfully rehabilitated after he has gone through the process of detoxification. Some addictions need medical detox intervention. This is for most prescription drugs addiction. In some cases, medical detox is not required.

Detoxification Process For Drug Addiction And Alcoholism

During drug addiction detoxification, the person must be closely monitored. Withdrawal from drug addiction has many side effects. Just imagine having a body that is dependent on drugs and then suddenly you cut off the drug usage. The body will have very strong cravings. Some of the most common side effects and symptoms of withdrawal are vomiting, sleeplessness, diarrhoea and other digestive problems, abdominal cramp, depression, anxiety, headaches, trembling and sweating. The patient is also subject to mood swings.

Some patients are given medications to help relieve the withdrawal side effects. Two known medications are believed to relieve physical symptoms and convulsion. Because the side effects may be quite alarming, the patient must be fully monitored.

Withdrawal side effects are also observed for alcohol detox patients. There are two withdrawal period, one is early withdrawal and the other is late withdrawal. The later you withdraw, the more likely you will have serious withdrawal side effects. Late withdrawal means the body is already so used with alcohol or drugs, therefore, it has become more dependent and withdrawal can be quite hard. In short, the seriousness of the withdrawal effects will depend on the duration of drug or alcohol usage.

Drug and alcohol detoxification will help prepare the patient for rehabilitation and addiction treatment programs. After the body has been detoxified, rehabilitation is easier. There is a higher chance that the person will be able to say goodbye to drugs and alcohol for real if he has undergone a detoxification process.
