Tips for Packing

There are many things to keep in mind when you are preparing to move. If you pack carefully, your fragile items will be less likely to break and you will have easy access and a head start on organizing after your move. People generally like to pack their own things, but that can be a time-consuming chore if you have many possessions. It is important to allow plenty of time for packing; it can take weeks or even months.

First, sort your items to decide what you’ll take with you and what will stay behind. Items that you don’t use can be stored or tossed in the garbage. Once you begin packing your things you will need to have packing supplies available. Such supplies as boxes, packing tape, bags, bubble wrap, wrapping paper, labels, and markers are essential to help make your move as easy as possible. Make a decision regarding what things are necessary and be certain you have them handy. You can buy most of the packing items at any local variety store. You can ask friends and relatives to save boxes for you. You may even be able to find them by calling your local grocery store.

A good starting point is to pack the things you don’t use very often. This way you can start packing early. Make sure the items that you use on a daily basis are the last to be packed away. You can label the packed boxes with a list of contents, but it can be simpler to mark the boxes with their intended locations, such as “kitchen” or “bathroom”.

A “fragile” label should be attached to any boxes that contain breakable items. To prevent damage, carefully wrap breakable or fragile items with newspaper or bubble wrap. Your garments can be wrapped around delicate items to keep them safe. You’ll need to remember to unwrap them carefully, though. Make sure you close and secure the boxes with packing tape so that, when they are being moved from one place to another, they don’t burst open. Things that are shaped strangely or are simply too large to fit into a box, such as lamps, mops, and brooms, may have to be moved separately.

You may need to disassemble some furniture to be able to move it properly. Keep all furniture parts, especially screws and bolts, together for easy reassembly. The legs on furniture can be wrapped so that they won’t become scratched during the move. Wrap table tops with a blanket or something similar for protection. You will want to make sure your furniture is not damaged during the moving process. Be cautious when moving your items and don’t be in too much of a hurry.
