Finding Out More About Red Yeast Rice

Most of us know something about rice. We cook with it and we know it comes in many different varieties. But red yeast rice may well be new to you. So what is it like and why should you take an interest in it?

This particular type of rice looks similar to many other forms of rice, although it looks more like pellets than actual grains of rice. It is red in color though, and this makes it quite distinctive. It is used a lot in Asian cooking, and indeed it can be cooked just as you would cook normal rice. But because of the yeast it contains it is a fermented type of rice, and that means it is not normally used on its own. When combined with many other ingredients you can get the best from it in many ways.
